**UPDATE April 18, 2020: I have changed the name of this pattern from the Picot Can Holder to the Picot Beverage Holder. The pattern now includes instructions for coffee cups! A 12oz and 16-20 oz coffee cup are the same as the regular 12 oz can and 16oz can, but I also added additional instructions for a 30 oz coffee cup! Hope you enjoy this update!

The Picot Beverage Holder is a quick and easy crochet pattern, that uses less than 1.5 oz of yarn! I used Bernat Maker Home Decor yarn and think it’s perfect for this type of project! The stitch definition is swoon worthy and it’s durable enough so it can handle the stretching and touching it will endure.

This pattern includes instructions for four different size holders. The Skinny will fit a slim 12 oz can, the Regular will fit a standard 12 oz can and 12 oz coffee cup, and the Tall will fit a tall 16 oz can and 16-20 oz coffee cup, and the Large will fit a 30 oz coffee cup.

I hope you enjoy making this Picot Beverage Holder! Continue reading below to hear my inspiration for this pattern and to learn more about the yarn I used, then scroll down for the written pattern!

Inspiration

One of my favorite crochet stitches inspired this design! I first learned and used the picot single crochet stitch (PSC) when I designed my Picot Pillow pattern and I have been hooked on it ever since! The picot single crochet stitch is like a mini bobble, it pops out and adds such a fun texture! It’s super easy to create and I share detailed instructions down below on how to make it, but if you’re still having troubles with it, check out the video tutorial for this pattern!

Yarn

The Picot Beverage Holder uses Bernat Maker Home Dec Yarn. This yarn can sometimes be hard to find but you can usually find it HERE on Amazon, HERE on Yarnspirations website, or you may be able to find it at your local Michael’s or Walmart.

I have seen many people substitute for regular acrylic or cotton yarn so you can try that too! Although Bernat Maker Home Dec Yarn is a bulky (5) weight yarn, I have seen others use medium (4) weight yarn and it’s turned out just fine, but if you find that it is too thin, you could use 2 strands held together to match closer to a bulky weight!

Notes

  • This pattern will be worked on the ‘wrong side’, meaning the side that is facing you while you are working will be on the inside when we are done. After you tie off your yarn and weave in the ends, flip the holder inside out so that the side with the picot stitches (the bumps) are facing out.
  • The number in parenthesis at the end of each row represents the total number of stitches to be worked in that row.
  • This pattern is joined at the end of each round with a slip stitch. The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
  • Repeat stitches between the ** until the end of the round or until otherwise stated.

Supplies

Abbreviations (US Terms)

ST(s) – Stitch(es)
SL ST – Slip Stitch
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
SC FLO – Single Crochet Front Loop Only
PSC – Picot Single Crochet

Special Stitches

Single Crochet Front Loop Only (SC FLO):

The front loop of a stitch is the closest loop to you, the back loop is the loop on the other side of you. For a single crochet front loop only, single crochet working into only the loop closest to you. This will create a ridge/rib around your work.

Picot Single Crochet (PSC):

The PSC will be worked on the wrong side so when the bumps it creates are pushed behind, they will be sticking out on the right side, creating beautiful texture.

Insert your hook into the designated stitch. Pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through the 1st loop on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the 1st loop again. Yarn over and pull through the 1st loop once more. Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Push the CH 3 you just created behind and work the next ST.
