Picot Collection

The picot single crochet stitch is one of my favorite crochet stitches and I now have over 14 crochet patterns in my Picot Collection! They all feature the same amazing textures and stitches and I will continue to add more patterns to the collection!

Yarn

I used Bernat Maker yarn, which is a bulky 5 weight yarn, for my tote bag. I love this yarn for its incredible stitch definition and it’s also durable, machine washable, and has a great feel to it.

This pattern uses about 1.25 skeins of Bernat Maker yarn. I got a 2 pack from Amazon and it was the best price I had found anywhere, plus there were tons of color options. Check it out HERE.

Size

The Picot Tote Bag measures about 13″ across and 14.5″ long. I made my straps about 12″ long but you can make them any length you want! You can also customize the height of the bag by working more or less rounds.

notes

  • CH 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a ST.
  • At the end of each round, join with a SL ST to the top of the 1st ST of the round. Turn your work, and work the 1st ST of the new round into the SL ST.
  • Odd numbered rounds will be worked on the right side [RS] and even numbered rounds will be worked on the wrong side [WS]. The texture from the PSC and BLO stitches will show on the right side and the wrong side will be flat.
  • Instructions between *asterisks* are to be repeated until the end of the round.
  • # ST means to work that # of stitches into the same space. ST x# means to work 1 ST into that # of STs across.

special stitches

Picot Single Crochet (PSC)

Insert hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. *Yarn over and pull through the 1st loop on your hook.* Repeat ** 2 more times. You should have a chain 3 on your hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Push the chain 3 back and work the next stitch (single crochet) (C). Right side view.

Working in the Back Loop Only (BLO)

When you look at the top of a stitch you will see 2 loops. The one closest to you in the front loop and the one furthest from you is the back loop. For a SC BLO, single crochet into the back loop only. For a HDC BLO, half double crochet into the back loop only.

Working in the Back Bump of the Chain

For Round 42, when working into the chain stitches for the bag straps, single crochet into the back bump of the chains to give the straps a nice, clean edge. When looking at the back of the chain, you will see a yarn loop bump out on the back, that is the back bump.

CH 39

Round 1 [RS]: 2 SC in the 2nd CH from the hook. SC in each ST across until 1 CH remains. 4 SC in the last CH. Working on the opposite side of the foundation chain, SC in each CH across until 1 CH remains. 2 SC in last CH. Join, CH 1, & turn. (80)

Round 2 [WS]: SC in each ST around. Join, CH 1, & turn. (80)

Rounds 3-7: Repeat Round 2.

Round 8 [WS]: HDC in each ST around. Join, CH 1, & turn. (80)

Round 9 [RS]: HDC BLO in each ST around. Join, CH 1, & turn. (80)

Round 10 [WS]: *PSC, SC* around. Join, CH 1, & turn. (80)

Round 11 [RS]: SC in each ST around. Join, CH 1, & turn.

Rounds 12-35: Repeat Rounds 8-11 (6 times)

Round 37 [RS]: SC BLO in each ST around. Join, CH 1, & turn. (80)

Rounds 38-40: SC in each ST around. Join, CH 1, & turn. (80)

The next rounds will create the straps. Use your stitch markers to mark where you want the straps to sit. Measure from the outside edge of the bag in to place them equally. I measured 3.5″ from the outside edge in, marking stitches 12, 32, 53, and 73. Feel free to customize where you place the straps, but keep in mind, if you do, the stitch counts below will be different for you.

To customize the length of the straps, work your chain any length you desire.

Round 41 [RS]: SC x12, CH 70, SK 19, SC x22, CH 70, SK 19, SC x8. Join, CH 1, & turn. (182)

Round 42 [WS]: SC in each ST around and in each CH of the straps. When working into the chain stitches of the straps, work into the back bumps of the chain to create a nice edge of the strap. Join, CH 1, & turn. (182)

Round 43 [RS]: SC in each ST around. Join. (182)

Tie off yarn and weave in ends.
