I’m so excited to share this crochet can cozy pattern with you! It’s perfect for summer when you want to keep your canned drinks cold but your hands dry from condensation! The All Star Can Cozy is a quick and easy project that can be made in a variety of color combinations and also in different sizes for different sized cans! I made mine red, white, and blue for the forth of July but you can make yours with whatever and as many colors as you’d like!

The All Star Can Cozy uses the star stitch to create a beautiful texture and also a unique look! The star stitch is worked in a 2 row repeat so you can easily make your cozy as short or tall as you’d like.

Skinny All Star Can Cozy by The Turtle Trunk

Inspiration

I recently learned the star stitch and I thought it was so fun and created such a beautiful texture, so I obviously wanted to design a pattern using it! I thought the star design was fitting for Independence Day and that a can cozy would be perfect for the summer!

Sizes

This pattern includes instructions for 2 sizes: regular 12oz can cozy and skinny 12oz can cozy. The regular cozy measures about 3″ x 4″ and the skinny cozy measures about 2.5″ x 4.5″. This design uses the Star Stitch and a 2 row repeat to create this beautiful texture! If you’re unfamiliar with this stitch don’t worry! I have an in depth photo tutorial down below and I also explain how to make it in the video tutorial for this pattern!

Yarn

For these can cozy’s I recommend 100% cotton yarn. Cotton yarn is durable, will absorb the condensation from the cans, and it washes well! I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton but feel free to use any cotton yarn! For each cozy you’ll need approximately 40 yards of yarn. The regular can cozy will have 5 stripes and the skinny can has 6, so you can use a different color for each stripe, alternate between 2 colors, or use one solid color! The possibilities are endless with how you color your cozy’s! Try using color combinations for specific holidays, nationalities, or 1 solid color for everyday use!

Star Stitch

Round 4 is where the Star Stitch will start. The first Star Stitch of the round will be worked a bit different than the rest. Round 5 will finish off the Star Stitch, then rounds 4 & 5 will be repeated for the remainder of the pattern.

For the first Star Stitch: CH 3, and insert hook into the 2nd CH from the hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), then insert hook into the next CH and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Next, insert hook into the base of the CH 3 and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), then insert hook into the next ST and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), then insert hook into next ST and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on your hook. CH 1.

For the rest of the Star Stitches of the round: Insert hook into the “eye” of the previous Star Stitch and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). Insert hook between the 1st and 2nd posts of the previous Star Stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), then insert hook into the same ST as the last worked ST of the previous Star Stitch (4 loops on hook). Next, insert hook into the next ST and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Insert hook into next ST and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on your hook. CH 1. Repeat around.

At the end of the round, work a HDC in the same ST as the last worked ST of the previous Star Stitch. Join & CH 1.

Round 5: to finish the Star Stitch, SC in the 1st ST then SC in the “eye” of the 1st Star Stitch. For the rest of the round work 2 SC in each “eye” around. At the end of the round work 1 SC in the last ST. Join & CH 1.

How to Change Colors

If you are wanting to make your cozy’s striped, you can change the color after working Round 5. On the final pull through on the last SC, drop your current color and pick up the new color. Work the final pull through with the new color, join, and CH 1. If you are going to use the last color again, you can leave that color attached and pick it up later.
