I love crochet headbands! I have a handful of cozy headband patterns, like the Country Cottage Headband, Cloud Nine Headband, and the Toasty & Twisted Ear Warmer. These all have wide bands, making them great for the cooler months but not so great when it’s hot outside. I decided to design a headband more suitable for Spring and Summer, for when you want to wear something to keep your hair back or just a cute hair accessory but don’t want to extra warmth of a thick headband! So I took my most popular crochet pattern, the Picot Headband, and made a skinny version, the Skinny Picot Headband!

Inspiration

If you’re familiar with my patterns, then you know I love the picot single crochet stitch! At this moment I have over 10 patterns that use it! It creates such a fun and beautiful texture.

2 years ago I designed and shared the original Picot Headband crochet pattern and it’s still one of my favorite crochet item’s I’ve ever made! It’s also my most popular pattern, being the only pattern to have over a million views on YouTube, the most views on my blog, and being shared hundreds of thousands of times on Pinterest! I think what’s so lovable about it, is that it’s super quick to make and has so much gorgeous textures to it!

The only down side to the original Picot Headband is that it is an ear warmer. It has a wide band that’s perfect for keeping you warm during the colder months but once Spring arrives, you put away and don’t wear it again until Fall hits. So I decided to design a matching headband that’s more suitable for the warmer months so you can rock a Picot Headband all year long!

Yarn

The Skinny Picot Headband uses only 30-40 yards of medium (4) weight yarn. This project is perfect for using up left over skeins or random strands of yarn you may have lying around! I used Lion Brand Yarn Color Theory for my headbands and I really love how stretchy and soft this yarn is! It also comes in a variety of gorgeous colors. I used the color ways Ivory, Bee Pollen, and Raisin as seen below.

Lion Brand Yarn is frequently having sales on their website so be sure to check there often or sign up for their email list to be notified when yarn is on sale!

Feel free to use any medium (4) weight yarn that you’d like though! I used 100% acrylic yarn but a few of my pattern testers used cotton yarn and said it worked out great too!

Sizes

The instructions below include 8 sizes: Baby Small (0-3 months), Baby Medium (3-6 months), Baby Large (6-12 months), Child Small (1-3 years), Child Large (3-10 years), Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large. Check the size chart to find the size that best suits your head circumference (or the head circumference of those you are making the headband for).

To ensure proper sizing, it is always a good idea to check your gauge, as you may have a tighter or looser tension than I. There is a gauge pattern included below. Go up or down as many hook sizes needed to reach proper gauge. If you are between sizes or are using super stretchy yarn, I would suggest making the next size down as this headband already has quite a bit of stretch to it.

Gauge

6 STs x 6 Rows = 2” x 2”

Follow Rows 1-6, working 6 STs across for Row 1.
Adjust hook size up or down to meet gauge.

Notes

  • Pattern is split up between baby, child, and adult sizes. Instructions are for the smallest size first, followed by the next size up in parentheses.
  • The number in parentheses at the end of each row represents the total number of stitches to be worked in each row.
  • Beginning chains do not count as stitches throughout the whole pattern. At the end of each row chain 1 and turn, then work the first stitch into the last stitch from the previous row.
  • Stitches between ** are to be repeated until the end of the row or until otherwise stated.
  • To adjust the length of the headband, work any multiple of 3 for Row 1. Note that the ties added at end will add approximately 2” to the length of the headband.
  • The right side of your work will show the texture from the PSC and BLO stitches. The wrong side will be flat.

Special Stitches

Check out the video tutorial HERE if extra assistance is needed for the special stitches.

FHDC – Foundation Half Double Crochet

A FHDC is working your foundation chain and first row of HDC’s together in one.

CH 2, yarn over and insert hook into 2nd CH from hook. Yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through the 1st loop on the hook (that is the CH you will work into for the next stitch), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. That is the first FHDC. Now working into the CH you created at the bottom of the ST, work your next FHDC. *Yarn over, insert hook into the bottom CH, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 1st loop on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.* Repeat ** until you reach the specified length.

If needed, try using a stitch marker to mark where your first stich was made and/or where you created the CH to help know to work your next stitch.

SC BLO – Single Crochet Back Loop Only

When looking at the top of a stitch you will see 2 loops. The one closest to you is the front loop and the one furthest away from you is the back loop. For a SC BLO, work a single crochet as normal but only work in the back loop of the stitch.

Photo shows the front loop and back loop when crocheting.

PSC – Picot Single Crochet

Insert your hook into the designated stitch. Pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through the 1st loop on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the 1st loop again. Yarn over and pull through the 1st loop once more. Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Push the CH 3 you just created behind so that it bumps out on the right side of your work and work the next ST.
