You Are My Sunshine Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern

This crochet wall hanging is a cute and fun decoration for a kids room or playroom! Make in any colors to brighten up any space! The You Are My Sunshine Wall Hanging crochet pattern uses only single crochet stitches and color changes to create this playful tapestry.

A few months ago, BLICK Art Materials reached out to me and asked if they could send me some yarn for me to design a crochet pattern with and make a video for Instagram. (You can see the video HERE).

BLICK Art Materials has a plethora of art and craft supplies. I looked through their inventory and fell in love with all the colorful yarn the Premier Basix line had to offer.

I had been wanting to make some decor for my daughter’s room for a while, so this was the perfect opportunity to crochet her a wall hanging!

I was able to get all the materials I needed for this project from BLICK, that includes all the yarn, the crochet hook, the dowel, scissors, and yarn needle!

I came up with the You Are My Sunshine Wall Hanging design and chose colors that went with her room colors.

The best part about a design like this, is you can use any colors you want to go with your room, you can use even more colors or less depending on the look you want to get!

Let’s take a closer look at the yarn I used.

Photo shows the materials needed to make the You Are My Sunshine Wall Hanging crochet patter by The Turtle Trunk. This includes 6 skeins of yarn, a crochet hook, scissors, wooden dowel, and yarn needle.

Yarn

I used Premier Basix worsted weight yarn for this project. This yarn is durable and comes in a variety of beautiful colors. I used a total of 6 colors for my wall hanging, but feel free to use as many and whatever colors you’d like!

In the written pattern below you’ll see each color represented by a letter. They are as follows: Color A (Crepe) – the background color, Color B (Thistle) – Purple, Color C (Spring Green) – Green, Color D (Goldenrod) – Yellow, Color E (Turquoise) – Blue, and Color F (Pink) – Pink.

You can use any color changing technique that you prefer for this project. I used a mix, which worked out really well for me! To try and minimize the amount of bobbins I had going, I carried the background (Color A) yarn through out the whole project (carrying it through the working stitches when using other colors. But I used separate bobbins for each letter, even using multiple bobbins for 1 letter.

I usally make correspoding YouTube tutorials for all my patterns but unfortunately I do not have one for this pattern. If you are struggling or need help with color changing or reading the graph, here is a different video of mine that also uses these techniques so you can check it out and hopefully it will help!

FINISHED SIZE

20″ x 28″ (includes 3″ fringe)

GAUGE

15 STs x 15 Rows = 4″ x 4″ in SC
Adjust hook size up or down to meet gauge.

NOTES

  • At the end of each row, CH 1 & turn. The CH 1 does not count as a ST.
  • This pattern includes both written instructions and a graph. You can follow along with one or both.
  • Written Instructions: each row will have an arrow beside it telling you which direction that row will be worked. When working on the right side (RS) you will see ‘<’. When working on the wrong side (WS) you will see ‘>’. Make sure all loose ends are on the wrong side.
  • From Row 2 on, only SC stitches are used. This pattern is written in simplified terms, so each row will tell you the color to use and the number of stitches for that color. Ex. A10, B3, A10, means SC 10 with Color A, SC 3 with Color B, then SC 10 with Color A again.
  • Changing Color: change color on the last SC before a new color starts. Start your last SC as usual, before the final pull through, drop the current color, then pull through the 2 loops on your hook with the new color. The next SC you work will be the first of the new color.
  • Carrying Yarn: I carried the non-working yarn for Color A (background) through the working stitch to avoid cutting + attaching yarn or using multiple bobbins. I used separate bobbins for all the other colors though. Feel free to use your favorite color work method.

Do not cut off Color A yarn. You can cut all other colors and weave in the ends on the back side. Move onto “Attaching the Dowel”.

Attaching the Dowel

With your Color A yarn still attached, CH 1 and turn. Single Crochet across the row, working around the dowel. To do this, insert your hook into the first stitch, place the dowel on top of the row, then work your single crochet around the dowel. Repeat across. At the end of the row, Chain 1 and cut off yarn. Weave in ends.

You can either leave your wall hanging like this and hang it on a nail/screw as so, or you can add a string of yarn from each of the dowel to make a hanging strand.

Adding Fringe

Cut 68 – 6″ pieces of yarn. This will create 3″ long fringe. I used a mix of Colors B-F. You can adjust the length of fringe to be any length. You’ll want to cut it double the length you’ll want the final piece of fringe to sit.

Using your crochet hook, insert it into the 1st stitch on the bottom of the wall hanging. Loop a single piece of fringe around your hook and pull it halfway through the stitch. Take the 2 ends of the fringe and bring it through the loop of fringe piece and pull tight to secure. Repeat this will all of the piece of fringe in each Stitch across the bottom of the wall hanging.

And you’re all done!
