Country Cottage Cowl Crochet Pattern
The Country Cottage Cowl features a beautiful, rigid texture and is the perfect accessory for Fall and Winter! This crochet cowl pattern includes instructions for two size, child and adult, but you can easily adjust it to be any size!
This has been one of my most highly requested patterns! I’ve been asked numerous times over the past year if I planned on making a scarf pattern for the Country Cottage Collection. I’ve had the idea written down in my notes for a long time and I’m so happy to have finally finished one for the collection. So introducing the Country Cottage Cowl!
If you’ve made any of the other Country Cottage patterns you may have noticed they are all worked in the round, that’s just the nature of this stitch pattern. So I went with a cowl pattern and I just love it! It wraps nicely around the neck and provides plenty of warmth! I’ve included 2 sizes in this pattern, child and adult, but you can very easily adjust the the length and width to be any size!

Inspiration
In 2020, I designed the Country Cottage Stocking, which is a crochet Christmas Stocking pattern. I fell in love with the texture that 2 simple crochets stitches, the double crochet and front post double crochet, created so I’ve been designing as many Country Cottage patterns that I can with them!
In 2021 and early 2022, I had designed the Country Cottage Mittens and Country Cottage Beanie patterns I was asked many times to design a matching scarf too that a set could be made! I loved this idea so I’m thrilled to finally have the Country Cottage Cowl done!
Paired with the mittens and/or the beanie, these would make a wonderful gift set or matching set for yourself!
Yarn
For yarn I used Big Twist Value in the color Mustard, but feel free to use any medium (4) weight yarn! Big Twist Value can be found at Joann’s stores and I love how affordable it is, yet still feels soft and comes in a variety of beautiful colors.
Other yarns I think would work great for this pattern is: Lion Brand Yarn Color Theory, Lion Brand Yarn Basic Stitch, Red Heart Yarn Comfort, Red Heart Yarn Super Saver, I Love This Yarn!, or Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek.
Feel free to also use more colors, to make a striped or clock blocked cowl!
Sizing
The instructions for the Country Cottage Cowl include 2 sizes: child and adult. The child size measures approximately 25″ in circumference and has a width of about 8″. The adult size measures approximately 28″ in circumference and has a width of about 10″.
This pattern can easily be adjusted to be any size though! Try making it smaller for a toddler, make it extra long to be an infinity scarf at can be wrapped around multiple times, or work extra rows for more neck coverage!
To adjust the circumference: work any even number of chains for your foundation chain.
To adjust the width: repeat rounds 3 & 4 as many times until your desired width is reached.

Gauge
10 STs x 8 Rows = 4” x 4”
CH 20, without twisting your chain, SL ST into the 1st CH to create a loop. CH 2. (20)
Round 1: DC in each CH around. Join & CH 2. (20)
Round 2: *DC, FPDC* around. Join & CH 2. (20)
Round 3: *FPDC, DC* around. Join & CH 2. (20)
Round 4: *DC, FPDC* around. Join & CH 2. (20)
Rounds 5-8: Repeat Rounds 3 & 4.
Your swatch should be 4” across and 4” tall. Adjust hook size up or down to reach gauge.
Notes
- This pattern is worked in the round. At the end of each round, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first stitch from the previous round then chain 1 or 2. Work your first stitch into the same stitch as the chain.
- Beginning chains do not count as stitches throughout the whole pattern.
- The number in parentheses at the end of each round represents the total number of stitches to be worked in each round. The first number is for the smallest size.
- Stitches between ** are to be repeated until the end of the round.

- Medium (4) Weight Yarn (I used: Big Twist Value in the color Mustard)
- 6.00mm (J) crochet hook
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
ST(s) – Stitch(es)
SL ST – Slip Stitch
CH – Chain
DC – Double Crochet
FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): Yarn over, insert your hook from the front, around the back, and to the front again, around the post of the next ST, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.
Country Cottage Cowl Pattern
CH 62 (child) or 74 (adult). Without twisting the chain, join to the 1st CH. CH 2. (62, 74)
Round 1: Working into the back bump of the foundation CH, DC in each CH around. Join & CH 2. (62, 74)
Round 2: *DC, FPDC* around. Join & CH 2. (62, 74)
Round 3: *FPDC, DC* around. Join & CH 2. (62, 74)
Round 4: *DC, FPDC* around. Join & CH 2. (62, 74)
Rounds 5 – 16 (child) or 20 (adult): Repeat Rounds 3 & 4.
Do not cut off yarn. Move onto border. If you don’t want a border, tie off yarn and weave in ends on the inside.
Border
Round 1: Loosely SL ST in each ST around. Join to the back loop of the 1st SL ST of the round. CH 1. (62, 74)
Round 2: Loosely SL ST in the back loop only in each ST around. Join. (62, 74)
Cut off yarn leaving a long enough tail to weave in. Attach yarn to the bottom of the cowl around the join of Round 1. Repeat Rounds 1 & 2 of the border to make a border around the bottom of the cowl.
And you’re all done!
