Farmhouse Blanket Crochet Pattern

The Farmhouse Blanket features the even moss stitch, stripes, and a crab stitch border to create a beautiful and cozy crochet blanket! This blanket is easy to make and uses only 2 basic crochet stitches for most of the pattern, so you can mindlessly work on it while you’re watching TV!

I am so excited to be releasing ANOTHER Farmhouse crochet pattern! These patterns use the even moss stitch to create the most beautiful texture!

The Farmhouse Blanket is no different, it features the same amazing texture and stitches, plus a fun stripe design, and a crab stitch border!

Best part about this blanket pattern is that it uses a one row repeat! It’s so easy that you can mindlessly work on this blanket when you’re watching TV!

I made my blanket a lapghan size (36″ x 48″) but you can make yours any size! Continue reading below to see the other size options, how to customize your blanket, and to learn more about the yarn I used. Then scroll down to the bottom for the written pattern! Happy making friend!

Farmhouse Collection

All the crochet patterns in the Farmhouse Collection use the same stitch, the even moss stitch!

The even moss stitch alternates between a slip stitch and a half double crochet stitch. A row begins and ends with a slip stitch and for the following row, you repeat, working a slip stitch into the one in the previous row and the same with the half double crochet stitches.

This creates a GORGEOUS texture! A half double crochet stitch has a third loop that pops out on the front, giving the fabric a bumpy, ribbed like texture.

I love how easy the even moss stitch is, using only 2 basic crochet stitches, yet it looks more complicated and intricate!

Something new I started with the Farmhouse Placemat and Farmhouse Table Runner patterns was to add a crab stitch / reverse single crochet border!

Close up of a crochet blanket with a crab stitch border.

This border adds a fun, twisted edge around the blanket. And again, it looks like it may be complicated to do but it’s really not. Like the name suggests, it’s just working a single crochet in reverse. So instead of working your stitches to the left, you’ll be working them to the right!

Have no worries if you don’t quite understand what I mean. In the video tutorial for this pattern, I go in great detail on how to do all the stitches!

Feel free to do a different border stitch if you prefer or don’t add a border at all! I actually really like to the look of this blanket without a border so you can leave your blanket without one if you want!

What kind of yarn is good for crochet blankets?

For my Farmhouse Blanket I used Lion Brand Yarn Color Theory. This is one of my favorite yarns! It is 100% acrylic but it is so soft, can be machine washed and dried, and it comes in a variety of gorgeous colors!

I used a total of 4 colors for my Farmhouse blanket: Nutmeg (Color A), Ivory (Color B), Satellite (Color C), and Thunder (Color D). See the photo below for the color order.

I love this color palette because it is neutral and has a lot of contrast. Each stripe pops but the colors flow nicely from one stripe to the next.

You can use any 4 colors you’d like or change up the stripe design to make something unique!

Color Theory is available in so many beautiful color options so you can create a color palette perfect for you!

Want to use a different yarn? Here are some other options I think would work great for this pattern: Lion Brand Yarn Basic Stitch, Vannas’s Choice, Brava Worsted, Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek, or I Love This Yarn.

Blanket Sizes

The pattern instructions are for a lapghan sized blanket (36″ x 48″), but you can make your Farmhouse Blanket any size! I have included some other size options below or you can completely customize the size.

All sizes have the same number of stripes, but the number of stitches and rows per stripe is different. The pattern starts with 1 large stripe, then repeats *2 small stripes, 1 large stripe* for a total of 19 stripes.

Chain 1 more than the number of stitches for the foundation chain.

Baby – 35″ x 35″ (107 STs x 132 rows)

Small Stripes – 4 rows per stripe
Large Stripes – 12 rows per stripe

Lapghan – 36″ x 48″ (111 STs x 184 rows)

Small Stripes – 6 rows per stripe
Large Stripes – 16 rows per stripe

Throw – 48″ x 60″ (149 STs x 236 rows)

Large Stripes – 36 rows per stripe

Customize your blanket!

Love the stitches of the Farmhouse Blanket but not the stripes? That’s ok! You can omit the stripes and just make a solid color blanket or create a new and unique striping pattern and change colors as you please!

Gauge

13 STs x 16 Rows = 4” x 4” in Even Moss Stitch

Adjust hook size up or down to meet gauge.

Notes

  • Numbers in (parentheses) at the end of each row/round represent the number of stitches to be worked in that row/round.
  • Instructions between *asterisks* are to be repeated until the end of each row/round or until otherwise stated.
  • Starting chains do not count as stitches. For the border, work the 1st ST into the same ST you joined to.
  • Work SL STs loosely (most importantly the 1st and last of each row) so that you can easily work back into them for the next row.

Supplies

ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

ST(s) – Stitch(es)

Special Stitches

*SL ST in 1st ST, HDC in next ST* repeat across. SL ST in the last ST.

Crab Stitch (also known as Reverse Single Crochet)

  • Work a single crochet in reverse! Instead of working a single crochet by crocheting into the stitches to the left, you will work to the right, crocheting the opposite way around the placemat.
  • Start by inserting your hook into the top of the last ST you worked in the previous round. Yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Repeat around, working to the right and in each ST around the placemat. When you reach the end, join with a SL ST to the same space you worked the 1st crab stitch.

How to Change Color

On the last ST of the last row, insert hook into ST, drop current color and pull through with the new color. CH 1. Cut off 1st color, leaving long enough tail end to weave in and continue with the new color.
