Design Inspiration

This turnip is the fourth pattern for the Pregnancy Progress Project! Measuring about 5″, it’s the same size as a baby at 17 weeks of pregnancy! This turnip would make a unique toy for kids or pets or it can be used as an adorable decor piece for the kitchen!

Notes

  • The main body is worked in the round and is not joined at the end of each round. Use a stitch marker to keep proper count.
  • Repeat instructions given between the asterisks (*) until the end of each round.
  • The number given at the end of each round states the total number of stitches for that round.
  • Final size is approximately 5″ long

Supplies

  • Medium (4) weight yarn in Beige, Purple, and Green
  • Hook: 4.00mm (G)
  • Polyester Fiber Fill
  • Yarn Needle
  • Stitch Marker
  • Scissors
  • 2 9mm Safety Eyes (Optional)
  • Black Crochet Thread (Optional)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

ST(s) – Stitch(es)
CH – Chain
SL ST – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
SC2TOG – Single Crochet Two Together
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Pattern

Main Body (staring with Green)

Magic Circle, CH 1

Round 1: SC x7 inside circle (7)
Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (14)
Round 3: *1 SC in 1st ST, 2 SC in next* (21)
Round 4: *1 SC in 1st 2 STs, 2 SC in next* (28)

Change color to Purple

Round 5: *1 SC in 1st 3 STs, 2 SC in next* (35)
Rounds 6-10: SC in each ST around (35)

Change color to Beige

Rounds 11-13: SC in each ST around (35)
Round 14: *SC in 1st 3 STs, SC2TOG in next* (28)
Round 15: SC in each ST around (28)
Round 16: *SC in 1st 2 STs, SC2TOG in next* (21)
Round 17: SC in each ST around. (21)


Add eyes between rounds 12 & 13 and 4 STs apart. Using crochet thread, add mouth centered between eyes and 1 ST down.


Round 18: *SC in 1st ST, SC2TOG in next* (14)
Round 19: SC2TOG in each ST around (7)
Rounds 20-21: SC in each ST around (7)

Round 22: SC in 1st ST, SC2TOG in next, SC in next ST, SC2TOG in next, SC in last ST (5)

Insert your hook through the opening and across to the 3rd ST, SL ST into the 3rd ST to close up the hole.

CH 5 and tie off leaving a 1” tail.

Leaf (with Green)

CH 19

SC in 2nd CH from the hook. SC in the next 5 STs, HDC in the next 6 STs, DC in the next 5 STs. In the last CH, work 8 DCs. (Now you are working on the opposite side of the CH)
DC in the next 5 STs, HDC in the next 6 STs, SC in the next 6 STs. (42)

CH 1 and Turn (now working back the way we came)

*SL ST into the 1st ST, SC in the 2nd ST, HDC in the 3rd ST, (3 DC, CH 2, SL ST) into the 4th ST.* Repeat ** once.

*SL ST into the next ST, SC in the next, HDC in the next, DC in the next, (3 DC, CH 2, SL ST) into the next.* Repeat ** once.

SL ST into the 19th ST. Work 2DC in each of the next 4 STs.

Now working on the opposite side

SL ST into the next ST. *(SL ST, CH 2, 3 DC) in next ST, DC in next, HDC in next, SC in next, SL ST in next.* Repeat ** once.

*(SL ST, CH 2, 3 DC) in next ST, HDC in next, SC in next, SL ST in next.* Repeat ** once.

Tie off leaving 6” tail. Using your yarn needle, sew tail end to the top center of the Turnip. Secure with a double knot and hide end inside turnip.
