Yarn

I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Light Sage and Yarn ID in Oats for my mittens. Both these yarns are 100% acrylic, medium (4) weight yarns. I highly recommend either of these yarns for the Country Cottage Mitten pattern as they’re both super soft and warm! I Love This Yarn comes in so many amazing colors, I had a hard time choosing one! I am very happy with the Light Sage and am planning many more projects with it! As for the Yarn ID, it doesn’t have as many color way options but the few that they do have are beautiful and Oats is one of my favorites!

Feel free to substitute with your favorite medium (4) weight yarn though! I love acrylic yarn because of it’s durability but you can use wool or a blend if you’d prefer! You can also try using variegated yarns or using multiple colors to create stripes!

Use your stitch marker to keep track of your rounds.

Cuff

The following instructions will create ribbing that is approximately 4” tall, making the fold over cuff 2” tall. Feel free to chain more or less to get a taller or shorter cuff.

CH 16

Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook, SC in each CH across. (15) SL ST in the top of the next 2 STs from the last round of the hand. Turn.

Row 2: Now working back up the cuff, SC BLO in each ST across. CH 1 & turn. (15)

Row 3: SC BLO in each ST across. (15) SL ST in the top of the next 2 STs from the last round of the hand. Turn.

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until the end of Row 15, 19, 23, 27, 31.

SL ST into the last ST from the previous round of the hand. Turn. Working into the starting chain and the last row of the cuff, SL ST in each CH & the back loop only of each ST across. Tie off yarn and weave in ends.

Thumb

The thumb is worked in continuous rounds, do not join at the end of the round. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds.

Magic Circle, CH 1

Round 1: SC x (4, 5, 5, 6, 7) inside the circle (4, 5, 5, 6, 7)

Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (8, 10, 10, 12, 14)

After a few rounds, weave in the tail end from the beginning. As your thumb gets longer it’ll be harder to get to the inside tip.

Round 3: SC in each ST around (8, 10, 10, 12, 14)

Repeat Round 3 until the end of Round 8, 10, 12, 13, 15.

Join to the 1st ST and tie off yarn leaving a 12” long tail.

Sew thumb around the thumb hole on the hand. Start at the bottom of the thumb hole. There may be more stitches around the thumb than there is around the hole. Work the thumb around as evenly as possible, you may need to work into some unconventional spaces. Secure with a few knots and weave end in the inside.
