Inspiration

I love the stitch combination of the Country Cottage Collection so much that I have designed over 13 patterns using it! I have been trying to design everything and anything with it and knew a basket would be a perfect addition!

A few years ago, I designed the Brecken Basket and had so much fun doing it! Since then I’ve been wanting to design another basket so it was about time.

Crochet baskets are such a practical and useful project. It’s a great way to use up scrap yarn and you can use it to hold even more yarn! Or any other knick knacks!

Yarn

The Country Cottage Basket uses 2 strands of bulky 5 weight yarn held together. This makes for a sturdy and stiff basket that won’t flop over.

I used Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me, which is one of my favorite yarns!

I used 3 colors for my basket to create stripes: Toast, Salt, and Cement. Feel free to use as many colors as you’d like or just make a solid colored basket!

PS. Lion Brand Yarn is currently 30% off!

Substitutions

Don’t want to use bulky 5 weight yarn? No problem!

You can sub for 1 strand of super bulky 6 weight yarn, like Wool Ease Thick and Quick or Bernat Blanket Yarn.

Or you can use 4 strands of medium 4 weight yarn held together.

Whatever yarn you choose to use, it would be a good idea to check your gauge first to ensure proper sizing. I had quite a tight tension for mine since I wanted the baked to be really sturdy. The nice thing about baskets though, is that it does’t matter if it’s a little larger or smaller!

Sizing

If you want to make your basket smaller or larger or perhaps make multiple baskets in a variety of sizes, it is easy to do!

To adjust the width: work as many increase rounds for the basket as desired.

When creating the handles, mark 8 stitches on opposite sides of the basket, *DC, FPDC* until the 1st mark, CH 8, SK 8 for the handle, *DC, FPDC* until the second handle, CH 8, SK 8, *DC, FPDC* until the end of the round.

You can adjust the width of the handles by chaining and skipping any number of stitches. Just be sure to work them evenly on each side of the basket.

Don’t want handles? No problem! Simply skip the 2 rounds for the handles!

To adjust the height: repeat rounds 10 + 11 until desired height is reached.

Supplies

Abbreviations (us terms)

ST(s) – Stitch(es)
CH – Chain
SL ST – Slip Stitch
SK – Skip
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet

Changing Color

On the final pull through on the last ST before a new color starts, drop current color, and pull through with the new color.

3rd Loop

A half double crochet stitch has 3 loops: 2 at the top and 1 on the back/front. When stated, work a half double crochet but only in the 3rd loop on the back of the stitch we’re working into. This will create a ribbing around the bottom of the basket, which will give our basket a nice flat bottom and sides that work straight up.

Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)

Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the next ST, from the front, around the back, and to the front again. Yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops. The rounds with FPDC will alternate with DC being worked into the FPDC from the previous round and FPDC being worked into the DC from the previous round.
