Design Inspiration

This apple is the second pattern for the Pregnancy Progress Project! Measuring about 4″, it’s the same size as a baby at 15 weeks of pregnancy! Not only is this great for tracking your pregnancy, but this apple would be perfect as a teachers gift! I hope you enjoy this tutorial, now let’s get making!

Notes

  • Pattern is worked in the round and is not joined at the end of each round. Use a stitch marker to keep proper count.
  • Repeat instructions given between the asterisks (*) until the end of each round.
  • The number given at the end of each round states the total number of stitches for that round.
  • Final size is approximately 4″ tall

Supplies

  • Medium (4) weight yarn in Red, Green, and Brown
  • Hook: 4.00mm (G)
  • Polyester Fiber Fill
  • Yarn Needle
  • Stitch Marker
  • Scissors
  • 2 8mm Safety Eyes (Optional)
  • Black Crochet Thread (Optional)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

ST(s) – Stitch(es)
CH – Chain
SL ST – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet
SC2TOG – Single Crochet Two Together
HDC – Half Double Crochet
DC – Double Crochet

Pattern

Main Body (Red)

Magic Circle, CH 1

Round 1: SC 7x inside circle (7)
Round 2: 2SC in each ST around (14)
Round 3: *1SC in the first ST, 2SC in the next* (21)
Round 4: SC in each ST around (21)
Round 5:  *1SC in first 2 STs, 2SC in the next* (28)
Round 6: SC in each ST around (28)
Round 7: *1SC in first 3 STs, 2SC in next* (35)
Round 8: SC in each ST around (35)
Round 9: *1SC in first 4 STs, 2SC in next* (42)
Round 10 – 18: SC in each around (42)

Add eyes 4 STS apart and between rounds 12 & 13. Add mouth centered between eyes and down 1 round.

Round 19: *1SC in next 4 STs, SC2TOG in next* (35)
Round 20: SC in each ST around (35)
Round 21: *1SC in first 3 STs, SC2TOG in next* (28)
Round 22: SC in each ST around (28)
Round 23: *SC in first 2 STs, SC2TOG in next* (21)
Round 24: *SC in first ST, SC2TOG in next * (14)

Stuff apple with poly-fil

Round 25: SC2TOG around (7)

SL ST into next ST and tie off leaving a 12” tail

Stem (Brown)
Attach yarn to same ST you left off on with red.
CH 8. (working down the CH) SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each remaining ST (7). SL ST to the same ST as CH and tie off leaving a 2” tail. Tie tail ends together and hide ends in the apple.

Leaf (Green)
Attach yarn in the ST beside the stem.
CH 6. (working down the CH) SL ST in 2nd CH from hook. SC in next CH, HDC in next, DC in next, and work 3 DC in the last CH. Tie off leaving a 2” tail. Tie tail ends together and hide ends in apple.

Take the 12” strand of red and weave it through the final 7 STs of the body, pull tight and knot. With yarn needle, pull strand down the center of the apple and through the bottom, pull tight to cinch the top of the apple. Tie a secure knot at the bottom and weave ends in.
