Papaya Crochet Pattern

Design Inspiration

This papaya is the ninth pattern for the Pregnancy Progress Project! Measuring about 11″, it’s the same size as a baby at 22 weeks of pregnancy! Not only is this papaya a cute addition to tracking your pregnancy, it would also make an adorable toy for your kids or pets!

Notes

• Pattern is worked in rows. Chain 1 and turn at the end of each row. The chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
• The number in parenthesis at the end of each round states the total number of stitches for that round
• Final size is approximately 11 inches

Supplies

• Medium (4) weight yarn in Orange, Green, and Black
• Hook: 4.00mm (G)
• Polyester Fiber Fill
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors
• 2 10mm Safety Eyes (Optional)
• Black Crochet Thread (Optional)

Pattern

Front and Back Panels
(make 2: make the front panel in orange first, then the back panel in green second.)

CH 5

Row 1: SC in 2^nd CH from hook. SC in each ST across (4)

Row 2: CH 1 and turn. SC across (4)

Row 3: CH 1 and turn. 2 SC in 1^st ST, SC in next 2 STs, 2 SC in last ST (6)

Row 4: CH 1 and turn. SC across (6)

Row 5: CH 1 and turn. 2 SC in 1^st ST, SC in next 4 STs, 2 SC in last ST (8)

Row 6: CH 1 and turn. SC across (8)

Row 7: CH 1 and turn. 2 SC in 1^st ST, SC in next 6 STs, 2 SC in last ST (10)

Row 8: CH 1 and turn. SC across (10)

Row 9: CH 1 and turn. 2 SC in 1^st ST, SC in next 8 STs, 2 SC in last ST (12)

Row 10: CH 1 and turn. 2 SC in 1^st ST, SC in next 10 STs, 2 SC in last ST (14)

Rows 11-18: CH 1 and turn. SC across (14)

Row 19: CH 1 and turn. 2 SC in 1^st ST, 2 SC in next 12 STs, 2 SC in last ST (16)

Rows 20-32: CH 1 and turn. SC across (16)

Row 33: CH 1 and turn. SC2TOG, SC in next 12 STs, SC2TOG (14)

Row 34: CH 1 and turn. SC2TOG, SC in next 10 STs, SC2TOG (12)

Row 35: CH 1 and turn. SC2TOG, SC in next 8 STs, SC2TOG (10)

Row 36: CH 1 and turn. SC2TOG, SC in next 6 STs, SC2TOG (8)

Row 37: CH 1 and turn. SC2TOG, SC in next 4 STs, SC2TOG (6)

(When the front panel is complete)

CH 1 and SC around the entire front panel, working 1 SC into each row along the sides and each ST along the top and bottom. Work 2 SC into each corner to help create a smooth corner. When you reach the beginning, SL ST to the 1^st SC made. Tie off yarn and add the seeds, eyes, and smile:

When you complete the front (orange) panel, take the black yarn and sew on the seeds. You can make the seeds as dense or spread out as you like, and try making them in a oblong shape in the middle of the front panel. If adding a face, be sure to leave enough room to place the eyes and smile.

Add the eyes between rows 10 & 11 and using your black crochet thread add the mouth in a ‘V’ shape centered between the eyes and 1 ST down.

Make the back panel in green.

(Once the back panel is complete)

CH 1 and SC around the entire front panel, working 1 SC into each row along the sides and each ST along the top and bottom. Work 2 SC into each corner to help create a smooth corner. When you reach the beginning, SL ST to the 1^st SC made. CH 1 and turn. Place the back panel on top of the front panel so the edge lines up, and SC the two panels together. Again, work 1 SC in each row along the sides and in each ST on the top and bottom, and work 2 SC in each corner. Fill your papaya with stuffing before closing. SL ST into the 1^st SC and tie off. Weave in your end.
