Design Inspiration
A few weeks ago I shared the free crochet pattern for the Brecken Basket! While designing the Brecken Basket I realized that with a few adjustments, that pattern would make for a great crochet bag, and with that the Brecken Bag pattern was created!
The Brecken Bag measures approximately 14″ in width and 12″ in length, not including the straps. The straps add about 8″ more in length but they can easily be adjusted to be any length you’d like! This pattern uses bulky weight yarn and a large crochet hook so it works up quickly! This pattern also uses only basic crochet stitches so it’s beginner friendly!
Features
The Brecken Bag features a bold main color and contrasting stripes. The pattern shows you how to make these fun color changes but feel free to use as many or few colors as you’d like! I think the Brecken Bag would look amazing in one solid color, two toned, or in a handful of colors! Have fun with it and make it fit with your own personal style!
The Brecken Bag also features 2 straps that can be adjusted to be any length you desire. The pattern will show you how to make straps that’ll sit nicely on your shoulder but feel free to make them longer for a crossbody bag or shorter for more of a handbag style.
Yarn
For yarn I used Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me. Hue + Me is a bulky (5) weight yarn. Hue + Me comes in the most beautiful color ways! I highly recommend this yarn. For my Brecken Bag I used the colors Mustard (yellow), Salt (white), and Werewolf (black). This color combination fit my style perfectly! There are so many different color combinations you can create though to fit your own style!
I used just under one skein of the main color (yellow) and just under half of each of the constrasting stripe colors (white and black). So if you’re using 3 colors just like I did, you’d need 3 skeins of yarn, one of each color, and you’d have some left over. If using only one color for your whole bag, you’d need only 2 skeins of yarn and would only have a little bit left over. Hue + Me is about $7 USD per skein from Lion Brand Yarn’s website and with shipping on top, it can be a but pricey. BUT Lion Brand Yarn is constantly having sales on their site so if you’re wanting the best deal, I highly recommend signing up for the newsletter or keeping an eye out for their next sale!
Yarn Substitutions
Bulky weight yarn can sometimes be hard to find! If you’re unable to get Hue + Me or want to try a different kind of yarn here are some more options.
Bernat Maker Home Dec would be another great option! I love this yarn, it’s so unique and shows off the stitch definition incredibly! The only problem with Bernat Maker Home Dec is that it is so hard to come by! There have been shortages the past few years so Amazon is usually the only place I can ever find it, but other places to look would be on Yarnspirations website and in store at some Walmart and Michael’s locations.
Another option you could try is to substitute the bulky weight yarn for 2 straps of medium (4) weight yarn held together! This would especially be a great idea if you wanted to create a super durable and sturdy bag and used cotton or bamboo yarn! To ensure the sizing turns out right, be sure to check your gauge before you begin!
All in all, your preferred bulky weight yarn or medium weight yarn should work fine! Always check your gauge to ensure proper sizing though!
