why Crochet Baskets?
My favorite thing about crocheting baskets is their practicality and versatility.
They’re a storage solution that looks great!
You can use any colors to match or complement your home decor and customize the size to be exactly what you need!
Yarn
This Plaid Basket uses super bulky 6 weight yarn.
Super bulky yarn is a great option for crochet baskets because it works up quickly and makes your basket strong and sturdy. You can use any super bulky 6 weight yarn that you’d like, but I used Lion Brand Yarn Wool Ease Thick and Quick for mine. This yarn comes in a variety of beautiful colors and I love the look and feel it has.
Lion Brand Yarn is often on sale so keep an eye out for a great deal!
There are so many possibilities for color combinations for these Plaid Baskets.
I made 2 large baskets in different colors. The first basket I used Lion Brand Yarn Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Fisherman, Grey, and Black. For the second basket I used Black, Claret, and Cranberry.
I had a hard time finding the regular Wool Ease Thick and Quick in grey so I used the recycled version, which you can find HERE.
The Wool Ease Thick and Quick Recycled Yarn worked just as well as the regular and I didn’t notice much of a difference other than it actually seemed softer than the original. It doesn’t have as many color options but it is worth looking into if you cannot find a desired color in the regular Thick and Quick!
Color Combo Inspiration
As shown above I made 2 different colored plaid baskets, but the possibilities are endless for color combinations you can use!
You can use colors to match holidays, like orange for Fall and Halloween, or green or red for Christmas, or pastels for Easter, and so on. Or you can use neutral colors to go with any room or match your kids room or favorite colors.
You can even use this pattern to make a checker board design or make a unique square pattern! See the photo below for some fun color combo ideas.
To follow a classic plaid design: you will use 3 colors. Generally these colors would all be different shades of the same color, 1 light, 1 medium, and 1 dark shade. You can substitute the lightest color for white and/or the darkest for black too.
To make a checker board pattern: use 2 contrasting colors instead of 3. You will have to adjust how the pattern is written, by omitting Color C. You will just alternate between Color A and B. Note that this will change the yardage needed for each color too.
Other design ideas: You can try using more than 3 colors or just make a unique pattern by adjusting the square colors! Again, this will change the yardage needed, but this can be a fun way to make your basket even more special!
Handles
Adding handles to your Plaid Basket is another fun way to customize it too!
You can leave it without any handles at all, which provides a clean, simple look.
Add leather handles, which give it a more polished and professional look. I got these handles from Knitz n Purlz, you can find them HERE. They measure about 6″ and come in a variety of colors. I used the colors Black and Light Brown. They feature 4 holes on each side so you can easily sew them onto your basket.
In this pattern I also provide you with a crochet handle option! These crochet handles are made from a Romanian cord. These cords are strong and sturdy and have a beautiful look to them! I think the crochet handles provide a more rustic look and are a great option if you don’t want to buy any separate handles.
Sizes
This pattern includes 2 sizes: small which measures approximately 7″ x 7″ and large which measures approximately 10″ x 10″.
You can also adjust the pattern to be any size!
To adjust the width, work as many increase rounds for the base as many times as needed to get your desired size.
To adjust the length, repeat the square rounds as many times as needed to get your desired height.
I hope you enjoy this Plaid Basket crochet pattern! Now let’s get making!
Difficulty
Advanced Beginner
Gauge
8 STs x 6 Rows = 4 x 4 in ESC
Adjust hook size up or down to meet gauge.
Notes
- Numbers in (parentheses) at the end of each round represent the number of stitches to be worked in that round.
- The letter (A, B, or C) before the ESC stitch represents the color to work those stitches in. Example: A ESC x4 = work 4 ESC stitches in the color A.
- Starting chains do not count as stitches.
- This pattern is worked in joined rounds. At the end of each round, join to the 1st ST of the round with a SL ST and chain 1. Work the 1st ST in the last ST from the previous round.
- Stitches between *asterisks* are to be repeated until the end of the round or until otherwise stated.
- 2 HDC means to work 2 HDC into the same stitch. HDC or ESC x# means to work 1 stitch into that number of stitches across.
- To adjust the size of the basket:
- Width: work as many increase rounds for the basket as desired.
- Height: repeat the square rounds until desired height is reached.
Supplies
- Super Bulky (6) Weight Yarn in 3 colors
(I used Lion Brand Yarn Wool Ease Thick & Quick)- Color A: Small (43 yards / 40 meters) Large (106 yards / 97 meters)

Changing Color
On the final pull through on the last ST before a new color starts, drop current color, and pull through with the new color.
Carrying Yarn
For the walls of the basket, we will alternate between 2 colors to create the squares of the plaid. After changing colors do not cut off the previous color. We will carry that non-working yarn through our next 4 stitches with our new color. This will ensure we have the previous color ready for our next color change. To carry the yarn through, hold the non-working strand behind the next stitch, when you work your next stitch, work it around the non-working yarn. Continue this for each stitch around. When joining at the end of each round, work the slip stitch around all non-working yarn strands.
3rd Loop
A half double crochet stitch has 3 loops: 2 at the top and 1 on the back/front. When stated, work an extended single crochet (ESC) but only in the 3rd loop on the back of the stitch we’re working into. This will create a ribbing around the bottom of the basket, which will give our basket a nice flat bottom and sides that work straight up.
Extended Single Crochet (ESC)
Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through the first loop on your hook, yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook.
Twisted Single Crochet
Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, turn hook counterclockwise 360 degrees, yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Note: keep yarn loose on your hook!
