Lite vs Bulky

There are 2 versions of the Love to Cuddle Blanket: Lite and Bulky.

I released the bulky version a few years ago, and it uses bulky 5 weight yarn. This creates a thicker blanket that works up quicker! For my bulky blanket I used Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me and Lion Brand Yarn Go for Faux.

After releasing this pattern, I have been asked several times to make a version using medium 4 weight yarn, so here we are!

Photo shows a woman holding up a crochet heart blanket and the crochet heart blanket laying on a couch. Crochet pattern is the Love to Cuddle Blanket by The Turtle Trunk.

The look of these blankets is very similar but they are quite a bit different.

The number of stitches and rows are different plus they use different stitches!

The bulky version uses a single crochet stitch while this lite version uses a half double crochet.

Making a whole blanket using just the single crochet isn’t too bad when you’re using thicker yarn, but when using thinner yarn it takes forever to work up! So I opted to use a slightly taller stitch for this lighter version so it can work up a tad faster!

yarn

For my Love to Cuddle Blanket (lite), I used 2 different textured yarns. Color A (the background), I used Lion Brand Yarn Color Theory in the color Ivory. Color Theory is one of my favorite medium 4 weight yarns. It is so soft, machine washable and dryer friendly, plus it comes in a variety of gorgeous colors.

For the heart (Color B), I used Lion Brand Yarn Chenille Appeal in the color Rose Dawn. Chenille Appeal is a super soft and fuzzy medium 4 weight yarn. This was my first time using this yarn and I really enjoyed it! I love the feel it gives the blanket and I think having the 2 textures adds some extra interest to the design.

Feel free to substitute either of these yarns for any medium 4 weight yarn! You can use the same yarn in different colors or use 2 different textured yarns like I did!

sizes

This pattern includes instructions for 3 sizes of blanket: Baby (30″ x 30″), Toddler (30″ x 36″), and Lap (36″ x 48″). See the chart below for the yardage needed for each size. Photos included in this post show the toddler (30″ x 36″) size.

SizeWidthHeightYardage
Baby30”30”Color A- 541 yards
Color B- 171 yards
Toddler30”36”Color A- 698 yards
Color B- 174 yards
Lap36”48”Color A- 1,228 yards
Color B- 181 yards

The size of the heart is the same for all 3 sizes.

You can adjust the width of the blanket by working more or less stitches across with Color A, but be sure to work an odd number of stitches and start your heart in the center. You can adjust the length of the blanket by working more or less rows, working the same number before and after the heart.

Intarsia Crochet

This pattern uses the Intarsia Crochet technique. You will start a new skein (or bobbin) of yarn for each color change then drop and pick-up bobbins as needed.

This method creates a picture (or design) that will be two sided. No yarn is carried behind the other color (fair isle crochet), instead with intarsia crochet, when you are done with one color you will drop it and start a new color. The use of bobbins (or small balls of yarn) come in handy so you can pick up yarn from it instead of constantly cutting and attaching again. This method will keep your work looking nice on both sides as well as keeping yarn ends to a minimum. See the photo below for suggestions on where to start new skeins/bobbins.

HOW TO CHANGE COLOR

You will change color on the last HDC before a new color starts. Start your last HDC as usual, before the final pull through, drop the current color and pick up the new color. Finish the stitch by pulling through the 3 loops on your hook with the new color. The next HDC you work will be the first of the new color. Be sure your tail ends are all on the WS of your project.

notes

  • This pattern includes both written instructions and a graph for each of the 3 sized blankets. You can follow along with one or both.
  • At the end of each row CH 1 & turn.
  • All 3 graphs are included in a separate PDF.
  • Written Instructions: each row will have an arrow beside it telling you which direction that row will be worked. When working on the right side (RS) you will see ‘<’. When working on the wrong side (WS) you will see ‘>’. Make sure all loose ends are on the wrong side.
    • From Row 2 on, only HDC stitches are used. This pattern is written in simplified terms, so each row will tell you the color to use and the number of stitches for that color. Ex. A14, B63, A14, means: HDC 14 using color A, then 63 HDC using color B, then HDC 14 using color A again.
  • Graph: each square on the graph represents one HDC.
    • The numbers on the side of the graph represent the row number. You will be working on the right side of the blanket when crocheting the odd numbered rows and wrong side of the blanket when crocheting the even numbered rows.
